Other Orthodontic FAQs

What are the different types of braces?

We use miniature stainless steel braces, and clear braces made of translucent ceramic. Most of our younger patients choose the metal braces, and dress them up with different colors to match the season, or a favorite team or school. Most of our adults and older patients prefer the clear braces in the esthetic area of the top front teeth. Our office prides itself in offering the clear braces at no extra charge.

What are lingual braces?

Lingual braces are rarely used anymore. Generally, lingual braces are more uncomfortable than standard braces since they are next to the tongue. Orthodontic treatment often takes longer and is more costly. In addition, some people have difficulty talking with lingual braces. Presently, lingual braces are only used in special clinical cases, but with the advent of ceramic or clear braces, their use is limited.

Should I pay extra for designer braces, colored ligatures and brackets or flavored rubber bands?

No. Our office prides itself in offering clear braces at no extra charge.

Is orthodontic care expensive?

When orthodontic treatment is implemented at the proper time, treatment is often less costly than the dental care required to treat the more serious problems that can develop years later.

Orthodontic fees have not increased as fast as many other consumer products. Financing is usually available at no interest and our office offers many payment programs that will meet your needs. In addition, many insurance plans now include orthodontics. Considering the time spent, orthodontics is regarded as dentistry's best value.

Herbst Appliance FAQ

How will it feel?

At first the appliance feels like a mouthful, but within one week most patients are fully comfortable. You will notice the rods and tubes, but normal chewing and speaking is expected. There is restricted side-to-side movement.

How long will the Herbst be worn?

Correction of the bite with this appliance depends upon growth. For that reason, the Herbst remains in place for one year.

If I wear a Herbst will I need braces?

Absolutely. The Herbst corrects your bite only. The braces are needed for proper tooth alignment and to finalize the occlusion.

What do I do if it comes apart?

Simply open very wide and either look in the mirror or have someone help to replace the piston into the tube. This should not happen too frequently. If it does, call your orthodontist.

What do I do if something comes loose?

Please save any parts that come loose. We can usually clean and replace these parts very quickly. Call the office on the next business day. The receptionist will see that you are appointed properly to repair the appliance.

Why is timing so important?

People grow the fastest during puberty. In order to minimize treatment time it is important to place the appliance before this growth spurt. Also, if a person has already reached maximum height, the appliance will not have any growth remaining to modify.
